Robert Lee Winchell

Robert Lee Winchell, Age 82 of Round Rock, TX

Robert “Bob” Lee Winchell passed away on January 14, 2024, in Round Rock, Texas of heart failure at the age of 82. To most of us, he was fondly known as Pops.

Robert was born on October 3,1941 in Kansas City, Kansas to mother, Francis Sue Kester and father, Elmer Elisha Winchell. Their young family moved to Santa Ana, California in 1944. There, Bob attended elementary school through high school. He enjoyed playing football during his high school years, but at the age of 17, Bob left high school and enlisted in the United States Air Force on March 12,1959.

Robert married, and with his family relocated to many different places throughout his air force tenure. He served in Texas, Illinois, Korea, Indiana, Maine, Vietnam, Puerto Rico, North Carolina, Germany, New York, and California just to name a few places. This did not include his numerous short term duty assignments.

During Robert’s 26 years of military service, he was a specialized heavy duty fire truck maintenance technician, and First Sergeant. While serving, Robert received the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Valor Device with three Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters; Air Force Good Conduct Medal with one Silver and one Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster; Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters; Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with one Silver Oak Leaf Cluster; Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. Robert retired in 1986 as a Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force.

After retiring from the Air Force, Robert established his own business, Royalty Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning in Merced, CA. Just as the air force was a duty of service, so was his second career. Bob never met a stranger, and always greeted folks with a smile, kind word, or funny quip. He enjoyed talking with his clients and many became long lasting friendships. Bob was very proud of his business, and even more proud when his son, Craig Winchell decided to continue on in the family business in 2005.

Bob loved hosting the LSU / Saints football games at his home, making sure that plenty of delicious food dishes were served throughout. During the holidays, getting together with friends and making many many pies also brought him much joy.He also enjoyed going to Bingo and supporting the different clubs that sponsored the events, and made some amazing friends while there.

He was a man who had a funny saying for just about every situation. Family, friends, and acquaintances all got a good chuckle from his sense of humor. Robert lived his life on his terms, in charge of his direction and pace until the very end. Bob would say, “If there is something you need and I can help you, then I will do it! …and he always did!

Robert is preceded in death by his mother Francis Sue Kester, father Elmer Elisha Winchell. Robert is survived by his daughter Stephanie Mosier, son-in-law Gary Mosier, son Craig Winchell, daughter-in-law Kelly McNeil, sister Joanne Sten, and granddaughters Jennifer Sloan and Kimberly Mosier.
