Carla Lynn Vandenberg

Carla Lynn Vandenberg, 67, passed away peacefully in Georgetown, Texas, on June 22, 2024. A courageous 10-year battle with breast cancer led to a brain tumor and cancer in her spine. Carla was surrounded by her loving family and the prayers of many throughout her fight.

Carla was born in Dubuque, Iowa, on November 2, 1956. Steve Vandenberg and Carla LuGrain were married on June 19, 1976, at Sacred Heart Church in Dubuque. Together for 48 years, they had three wonderful children: Mark (Chiaki) of Hillsboro, OR, and granddaughter Sarah; Adam (Josie) of Waikoloa, HI, and grandchildren Leahna and Alexander; and Becca (John) of Georgetown, Texas, and grandchildren Emilia and Jonah.

Born to Carl and Joan (Fransen) LuGrain, Carla was one of nine children. She is survived by 7 siblings, Steve (Kathy), Kirk (Marcia), John (Emily), Carl “Fred” (Kim), Alan, Jolene Blume, and Joe; brother-in-law Ralph Vandenberg, 2 sisters-in-law, Diana (Pete) Conrad and Jodi Harry.

Carla was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Joan LuGrain; a sister, Robbie; a sister-in-law, Lana LuGrain; her father- and mother-in-law, Harry and Gerry Vandenberg; and brother-in-law, Mike Vandenberg.

A woman of deep Christian faith, Carla’s belief in God provided her with strength, comfort, and joy throughout her life. She generously shared her faith with those around her, inspiring many with her unwavering devotion to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Opportunities to express her love of Jesus were plentiful as they lived and worked in Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, South Carolina, Hawaii, Oregon and Texas.

Carla was known for her kindness, warmth, and unwavering love for her family. She was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, touching the lives of many with her gentle spirit and compassionate heart. Despite her illness, Carla remained a beacon of strength and grace, facing each day with hope and a positive spirit. 

The family would like to acknowledge the staff of Suncrest Hospice, Trinity Care Center, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Oregon Health and Science University, and McLeod Hospital for their care and support during Carla’s illness.

A memorial graveside service will be held at a later date in Dubuque, Iowa, to celebrate Carla’s life and honor her memory.  A memorial fund has been established in her name. Green Cremation of Austin, TX is assisting the family. www.cremation.green/obits/
